Announcing the project, deputy-mayor Keophilavanh Aphaylath stated that it would instil a sense of heritage into city residents and add another string to Vientiane’s tourist bow. He continued by saying the renovation would spruce up buildings and leave them looking much as they did after being constructed in the city’s heyday.
The city’s Urban Development Administration Authority will coordinate the restoration venture and has already named it Historic Town Renovation Trail 2015. The bureau says it plans to submit a request for a grant to the Japanese International Cooperation Agency to help with the scheme.
The planned conservation precinct covers a 500-acre segment of the town from Don Chan Beach on the right bank of the Mekong. A number of the city’s dining, wining and accommodation venues are located in this quarter. The architecture in the zone offers insights into the city’s history and is all part of the quintessential Vientiane experience.
