Thai PM opens parliament orchid market

The Thai prime-minister was on hand yesterday for the opening ceremonies of Bangkok’s latest market. The Bangkok Orchid Market is housed under a temporary structure outside the national parliament buildings, but will move to a new home on Phadung Krung Kasem canal with effect from 1 February 2015.

Buyers and browsers at the orchid market are presented with a marvellous sight as the hues of one of Thailand’s most famous products are a colourful melange. When the new canal location opens it will combine the flower with another famous Thai attraction, the talat nam, or floating market in English.

Prime-minister Prayut Chan-o-cha says that while the market is aesthetically pleasing, it will also give orchid-growers a venue to showcase and market their product. He told sellers that they needed to give buyers fair deals and ensure flowers were top quality.

The PM says orchid exports generate THBthree billion in income for the country every year, a figure that is only surpassed by the Netherlands. Bangkok Orchid Market is open from 09:00 to 18:00 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
