Although simplified visa requirements for citizens of many countries now give travellers easier access to Myanmar, one of the largest groups of visitors comes from Thailand. The statistics show Myanmar welcomed 165,000 citizens from its neighbouring nation.
Yangon Airport has separate terminals for domestic and international passengers. All international passengers are now processed at the new terminal which opened in 2007. Immigration officials say the separation makes it easier to keep records of passenger movements.
Myanmar introduced an e-visa system last September. This enabled passengers from selected nations such as Australia and Germany to apply for permission to enter the country online. The number of eligible nations was expanded on 2 January and now includes the likes of South Africa and Uzbekistan.

The number of international passengers arriving at Yangon Airport is continuing its upward spiral and has topped the one million mark. Myanmar’s Ministry of Immigration and Population has just released figures for 2014 which show 1,027,770 foreign visitors were processed at the country’s principal international airport.
