Lao carrier gets ready to fly to Attapeu Airport

A spokesperson for Lao Airlines says the carrier is all set to begin flying to Attapeu as soon as its new airport opens. Speaking to local reporters, Phuttasone Vannasack said management expected the service to begin on 2 April 2015.

The spokesperson says the airline will initially offer round-trip flights twice a week from the capital city of Vientiane. Saleum Tayalath, a senior director with Lao Airlines, had previously stated that flight services would commence just as soon as construction was complete.

After the fixtures and fittings have been installed, the airport has to pass final inspections by the national aviation bureau before it is good to go. Attapeu Airport was originally expected to be completed in June 2015, but the project management team says work is well ahead of schedule.

Attapeu is in the far south of Laos and close to its borders with Cambodia and Vietnam. Due to its remoteness, buses from Vientiane can take 24 hours to get to Attapeu. Tourism agencies and companies in the town say the new airport will be convenient for travellers and businesspeople.
