Emergency in Thailand from Thursday

To halt the spread of COVID-19, Thailand declares emergency effective from March, 26, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha sayd today.

It has not been announced what measures and new requirements will be implemented. Yet it is very probable that travel across the country, both within the provinces and between the regions will be banned and the curfew will be set up.

According to Government spokeswoman Narumon Pinyosinwat the state of emergency will last about one month.

The new requirements to control the disease will be announced between today and tomorrow. A special committee will be formed to work them out and strictly enforce them. There will be both requests for cooperation and compulsory requirements, the prime minister said.

While people are discouraged to travel to their home provinces and are asked to stay for the quarantine where they are right now, if you have an emergency to travel to another province in the next days – e.g. you are exiting the country through Suvannabhumi airport and have to get there from other provinces of Thailand – it could be a good idea to make the necessary re-arrangements to leave earlier.

"If the situation does not improve, there will be a total lockdown," Gen Prayut said.
