Chinese Airlines Restore Capacity, Offer Huge Discounts

Chinese airlines start restoring seat capacity after dramatic capacity cuts enforced earlier by the coronavirus outbreak and are offering dirt cheap tickets. No that we are saying it is the best time to travel around China, but...

Juneyao Airlines Co. sells one-way direct tickets from Shanghai to Chengdu, some 2,000 km west, for as low as 90 yuan (USD13) plus 50 yuan (USD7) in taxes. It is actually a three-and-a-half hour journey.

Almost 3 million seats will be back to the scheduled services of Chinese carriers during this week. As per reports of OAG Aviation Worldwide, the majority are for domestic routes. Predictably, the recovery of the pre-coronavirus capacity results in incredibly low fares the airlines offer to attract passengers.

China Southern Airlines Co. alone is adding 684,000 seats with China Eastern Airlines Corp. following closely with 566,000 seats. In the very beginning of the year, when the number of reported cases of coronavirus in China was insignificant, China’s overall capacity was around 16.9 million seats. It is still half of that number, but the recovery this week restores China's rank as the second-biggest passenger air travel market in the world.

Opposite to China, its neighbouring markets of South Korea and Hong Kong are sharply reducing capacity by over 20% this week only.
