A popular tourist destination, last yeat the Intramuros welcomed over 4 million tourists. Now the landmark is opened for a new experience – Intramuros by Night which is essentially a night tour around the former Spanish colonial fortress.
Founded by the Spanish in 1521, Intramuros has gone through various renovations during its centuries-long life. It withstood wars, occupations, and natural disasters and now, after the latest facelift looks fresher then ever.
To encourage tourists to visit the walled city in the evening, walkways and trees have been lightened up; reinforcement of old buildings has allowed to open access to previously closed areas, of which Fort Santiago’s dungeons and an old escape route called the Postigo de la Nuestra Señora de Soledad, which overlooks Pasig River, are a good example.
There is a number of itineraries on offer to take tourists around Intramuros after dark to experience the mysterious atmosphere of the fortress.
