Winter Tourism in Lhasa Becomes More Popular

Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region sitting in a valley of the Himalayas, and an important Buddhist pilgrimage destination, encourages pilgrims and tourists to visit the region in winter to avoid summer time crowds and experience winter charm in high-altitude areas.

Up to March, 15, a series of promotional tourism programs introduced by the local government and supported by the Tibet's tourism development department will be in force to attract visitors.

Some of the most famous scenic spots in Lhasa including the Potala Palace, the former winter residence of Dalai Lamas and a World Heritage Site, as well as the Norbulingka Summer Palace, the former traditional summer residence, will offer free or discounted admission.

All star-rated international and boutique hotels in Tibet and airlines serving the region will join the club with reduced rates and fares.

This is the third consecutive year when Lhasa launches its winter tourism promotion campaign. Last winter, between Nov 1th, 2018, and March 15th, 2.46 million domestic and international tourists visited Lhasa, showing a whooping 84.2 percent increase in numbers compared to the preceeding winter season.

Gradually, tourism industry becomes an important source of income for the locals who are mainly farmers and herders.
