2019 Sets Record High Tourist Arrivals in Taiwan

Taiwan has reported a record growth of tourist arrivals in 2019: a total of 11.84 million travellers visited the country, some 7 percent more than during the previous year.

According to statistics released by the Tourism Bureau, visitors from China, Japan and South Korea made the greatest contribution to country’s tourism boom.

About 2.71 million tourists from the total number were Chinese nationals, up 0.5 percent on year-to-year bases. Japan and South Korea both demonstrated an impressive growth: number of visitors from Japan increased by 10 percent, from South Korea – even more – by 20 percent.

Taiwan has recently been very active in international marketing campaigns and cross-sector collaboration and this strategy now starts yielding results.

Besides, charter flight subsidies were introduced last year, resulting in 38 flights from Japan and South Korea to Hualien in the fourth quarter alone. New offices of Taiwan Tourism Bureau were opened in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and London, UK. A number of promotion facilities were set in Moscow, Russia; Jakarta, Indonesia; Auckland, New Zealand; Sydney, Australia; Vancouver, Canada.

The tendency is expected to persist this year, too, with Taiwan getting more and more recognition as a new destination for tourism.
