Mountaineering in Nepal is promoted by a special body, the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) that is also responsible for safety awareness among climbers and mountaineerers, as well as for encouraging sustainable tourism among those who dare to challenge the Himalayas. The NMA administers climbing permits for 33 mountains in Nepal with altitudes between 5,500 metres and 6,600 metres categorised as trekking peaks. Totally, there are approximately 300 peaks in the country that are open for climbing. Normally, climbing and mountaineering in Nepal requires a permit which is issued either by the NMA or the Monistry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoTCA).
