Special Train Now Serves Colombo Fort–Kandy Route

Sri Lanka Railways has recently launched a special train service between Colombo Fort and Kandy, a large city and a popular pilgrimage and tourist destination in central part of the country.

The route will be operated daily with trains to Colombo leaving Kandy early in the morning at 4.30 am and then returning the same day with departure from Colombo Fort scheduled at 5.20 pm. While the distance between Colombo and Kandy is about 130 km only, it takes about 4 hours to reach either destination due to poor road conditions. Train will do a faster job covering the distance in 2 and a half hours.

For KandyColombo route one of the 8 new power sets recently imported from China and India by the Transport Minisrty is used. On November, 1, Colombo Fort to Badulla route was launched which is served by a newly imported state-of-the-art Chinese S-14 power locomotive, specially designed to operate in the hill country.

Earlier it was reported that Tourist Information Centre (TIC) in Kandy opened after a major renovation. The new TIC is located within an easy reach from Kandy's main attraction, the temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, at 13, Colombo Street.
