Seasonal Horn Snails Beach Attracts Tourists to Mekong Delta

The season for an unusual sight on Chay Muoi Islet located in the province of Ben Tre, one of Vietnam's southern provinces in Mekong Delta, has already started – head there to see an unusual quantity of horn snails washed ashore.

This annual phenomenon takes place between October and April when the seasonal tide washes ashore millions of horn snails with their conical shells. They fill up a 7 km beach forming a natural wall reaching one metre in hight and five metres in width.

The horn shell beach in Thoi Thuan commune, Binh Dai district can be reached either via a paddle through the narrow Yen Hao Canal or via a bumpy motorbike ride.

Horn snails are known under the common name potamidids. They inhabit mud flats and mangroves and are common in Mekong Delta area.

For the local farmers the shell wall is not just a beautiful sight – it has a practical use, too: the wall protects their fields from seasonal monsoons and high tides.

Other attractions and popular activities of Ben Tre province include a boat tour along the rivers in Con Phung Island, exploring tropical fruit and vegetable farms, and visiting Con Oc Island for authentic local experiences.
