Old Filipino Jeepneys to Be Replaced. Probably

Philippines' signature means of transportation, the ubiquitous old jeepneys, colourfully and creatively adorned and roaming the roads of the archipelago, may soon become a thing of the past.

The public utility vehicle modernization program (PUVMP) lanched by the Philippines' Department of Transportation (DOTr) foresaw the complete replacement of the old jeeps within July, 2020. And while the deadline has been recently scrapped, the controversial program will continue nonetheless.

To avoid phasing out, every old jeepney should pass yearly roadworthiness tests (and we personally have no idea how these vehicles with obviously out-of-dated exhaust system can manage to do so), though the Transport Undersecretary for Roads admitted that jeepney operators and drivers would no longer need to shift to Euro-4 standard models by July next year as planned earlier. They do however need to file a petition manifesting they would make the necessary upgrades of the old units. Some day.

The PUVM program was launched in 2017 but till now, only between 1 and 2 percent of all the vehicles in the Philippines comply with the requirements of Euro 4.
