India to Build 100 New Airports in 5 Years

100 new airports will be built in India by 2024. They will probably transform the travel pattern in the country making planes the most convenient, efficient and affordable means of transportation.

Together, the new ariports will add some 1000 routes to the network of domestic flights connecting towns and villages that are currently out of reach for air travellers.

During the next five years, one trillion of INR (~USD14 billion) will be spent to finance a plane-lease program in India to meet the demand for aircraft to serve the new routes adding some 1200 aircraft to the fleet plying domestic skies. Also in the frame of this project, the number of locally trained pilots should rise to 600 each year.

According to the sources, this project will help boost the economic activity in the country to achieve the USD5 trillion by 2025. While the plan looks quite ambitios, it is by no means unreal. It took India three years to increase the number of its functioning runways considerably from 75 to 450 and add 38 new airports to the exsisting ones.

India is not the only country looking into developing its air connectivity. China, for example, confirmed they would build 450 new airports by 2035.
