Intercity Express to Link Colombo Fort and Badulla, Sri Lanka

A new direct Intercity Express train will link Colombo Fort and Badulla, Sri Lanka, starting from November, 1.

The new Denuwara Menike express train will feature a luxury coach, three second class coaches and a powerset imported from China. The Department of Railways informs that the train is scheduled to leave Colombo Fort in the morning at 7 am. The new train is part of the wider program of developing better railway connectivity with upcountry area in Sri Lanka.

Currently there are other trains plying the same route. They are either passenger or mail trains travelling rather slowly and spending about 10 hours to cover the 300 km distance between Colombo and Badulla, sitting east.

Badulla is the main city of Uva Province situated in the lower central hills of Sri Lanka. It is a convenient gateway to some of the most popular attractions of the province including the Haputale and Ella as well as Horton Plains National Park. Badulla is home to Muthiyangana temple, an ancient Buddhist temple regarded as one of the sixteen sacred places in the country. The cult colonial era Demodara Nine Arch train bridge featured on many pictures of Sri Lanka is also located near Badulla.
