The days before celebrations of China's 70th anniversary, Beijing's new Daxing International Airport opened its doors during the official ceremony held by President Xi Jinping.
Located on the border of Beijing and Langfang, Hebei Province, Daxing International Airport is now Beijing's second international airport after Beijing Capital International Airport which is currently the world's second busiest airport after Atlanta, USA. The new airport will help combat passenger conjection at the Capital airport which has been operating at the edge of its capacity recently. Together with New York and London, Beijing is now one of the cities that boast two-long haul international airports.
Covering an area of 700,000 square metres what equals to 98 football fields, the Daxing airport is considrered the world's largest terminal in a single building. By 2025, it will reach its designed capacity handling 170 milion passengers.
British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Finnair are among the first international carriers that have already announced routes to Daxing. Seven domestic airlines are also expected to start operations from Daxing.
