The inaugural flight to Yangon was made on Friday, September, 20. IndiGo now perfoms daily flights between Kolkata and Yangon using an Airbus A320 that accommodates up to 180 passengers. Flight time between the two destinations is two and a half hours.
The representatives of the Myanmar Tourism Federation and Myanmar Tourism Marketing believe the direct flights will help further develop tourism industry and relations between the two countries.
Myanmar and India have close historical and cultural ties. The majority of Myanmar tourists visit India as pilgrims, including monks who head to India to study Buddha's teaching. Indians come to Myanmar with mostly recreational purposes visiting historical and archeological sites like Bagan or Mandalay. To encourage more Indians to visit the country, the Myanmar government has recently extended its visa-on-arrival programme for Indian nationals till the end of next September.
For IndiGo, that currently serves 54 domestic and 18 international/regional destinations, Yangon became the first destination in Myanmar in the airline's fortfolio. Other international destinations that will be added to IndiGo's network in October 2019 include Guangzhou in China, Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.
