Chengdu's Second Airport Takes Shape

Terminal 2 of Chengdu Tianfu International Airport takes shape with the major construction completed two months ahead of schedule on August 28th. Chengdu's second airport is set to become an important international flight hub after completion.

Terminal 2 consists of two underground and five above ground floors. It covers an area of 330,000 square metres. For the convenience of passengers, it will be connected to the high-speed railway line with trains travelling at 350 kilometres per hour. 

Construction of the new airport started in May 2017 with Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 planned to be built during the first phase. When ready, the two terminals will have a capacity to handle between 80 and 100 million passengers, 700,000 tones of cargo, and 320,000 aircraft a year. With 6 runways, Chengdu Tianfu International Airport will be the third largest airport in China after Beijing and Shanghai.

The design of the airport was proposed by China Southwest Architectural Design and Research Institute, China Airport Construction Group Corporation and French architectural firm ADP Ingenierie. The two terminal buildings of the airport are shaped after the mythical Sunbird, Chengdu's city logo.

The new airport is located in Lujia Town, Jianyang, Chengdu, 51 kilometres southeast of downtown ChengduChengdu Tianfu International Airport is scheduled to become operational in 2020 and will complement the current Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport which will continue to operate, too.
