It is expected that this year autumn will start later than usual across almost all regions of Japan.
Sapporo is likely to become the first region to welcome the autumn foliage season. The best date to enjoy yellow ginkgo leaves will be November 6. Maple leaves in Hokkaido's mountain are best viewed on November 7 – some 13 days later than the usual foliage peaks in the prefecture.
Thought the peak for this year’s autumn foliage season will indeed arrive later than usual, first both yellow and red foliage will appear about the same time as normal, according to the forecast of Osaka-based Japan Meteorological Corp. But both September and October will feature temperatures higher than average.
Temperature is one of the major factors that influence the colour of autumn foliage. The cooler the temperature, the faster leaves turn yellow or red. A warm autumn may decrease the intensity of autumn colours and/or delay the arrival of the autumn foliage season.
