Over USD390 million was injected into hospitality industry recently with investors fuelled by the potential growth of number of tourists drawn to the country by the Visit Nepal 2020 program. It is expected that in 2020 Nepal will welcome 2 million overseas visitors.
Currently, at least a dozen five-star hotels are under construction across the country. The majority of five-start properties will appear in Bhairahawa, where the country's second international airport is set to be built.
Four hotels in Kathmandu have been granted a five-star rating by the Tourism Department this year thus the number of high-end hotels in the country reaching 15. At the moment 5 new five-start hotels have successfully completed an environmental impact assessment report and are already at the different stages of construction. Five more are waiting for the Tourism Department approval and several more are in the design phase.
At the same time the existing hoteliers express their concern over the hotel building spree fearing new hotel rooms will create unhealthy competition and overheat the sector. The supply is going to be much higher than the demand, they say.
