With the introduction of BSP it will be easier to report ticket sales for participating travel agents as well as to settle their sales to airlines. Before the implementation of the BSP, there was no consolidated platform for travel agents to interract with airlines; instead, they had to contact each of the respective airlines directly in order to report and remit their ticket sales. The whole process used to be quite inefficient and time-consuming. After the introduction of the BSP reporting and remittance of sales by agents to the airlines will be streamlined and standardised.
“Aviation is a growing sector in Myanmar. As the country continues to develop and with more international airlines operating services in Myanmar, it is timely to introduce the BSP. Not only will it bring efficiencies in the interactions between airlines and travel agents, it will also modernise and support the growth of Myanmar’s travel and tourism sector,” said Conrad Clifford, regional vice president for Asia-Pacific at IATA.
With Myanmar air transportation volumes constantly rising, the urge for introduction of BSP was felt both by the agents and airlines. Currently, 5 airlines and 12 travel agents have already joined the system during the start-up phase. The coming months will see more agents and airlines enrolling.
The IATA BSPs were first introduced in 1971. Now they are used in some 180 markets serving around 400 participating airlines.
