Mr Phommahane said his company was currently in the process of negotiating for the first 14 of the vehicles and hoped they would be in use by next March. The town is also building a service station for the electric cars on northbound Route 13 close to Nam Khan Bridge.
The partner behind the US$four million scheme is the Japan International Cooperation Agency. Mr Phommahane added that the use of electric vehicles in Luang Prabang should help cut air pollution in the locality and also help lessen impacts on global warming.
He finished off by saying that if the project was fully realised, Luang Prabang would be the first city in the ASEAN bloc to introduce wide-scale use of electric-powered vehicles. The Green Company also says it is looking into the possibility of introducing electric vehicles in Vientiane, Pakse and Savannakhet.
