Boat Racing Festival in Quang Binh, Vietnam to Be Held on September, 2

Traditional annual boat racing festival in Quang Binh Province will be held on Kien Giang River on the National Day on September 2. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has recently recognized it as national intangible cultural heritage.

The festival in the central province of Quang Binh is a traditional celebration of Ma Coong ethnic minority group. The festival is dedicated to the oncoming rainy season. The participants are welcoming favourable weather conditions that would bring good and abundant crops. The current date of the celebration coincides with the National Day on September 2 established to commemorate the August Revolution of 1945.

The new status of the festival will help promote local tourism drawing more tourists to the province. Recognition of the festival as an intangible cultural heritage is also a sign of appreciation of cultural values and traditions of ethnic minorities of Quang Binh Province many of which are closely associated with daily activities and local way of life.

Besides Boat Racing Festival, one more celebration of Ma Coong ethnic minority group has received the same status. The drum beating festival is also held annually on the 16th day of the first lunar month, usually in the beginning of February. It is the biggest even of the year for Ma Coong people.
