Cambodia Reports Growth of Tourist Arrivals in H1 2019

Over 3.3 million tourists visited Cambodia in the first six months of 2019. According to the Ministry of Tourism's data, it is an 11.2 percent hike on year-to-year bases.

Out of the total number, Chinese tourists contributed 1.2 million visitors showing an impressive 38 percent increase and remaining the main source market for Cambodia with 38.7 percent of all the visitors being Chinese nationals.

Far behind are tourists from other important source markets, i.e. Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. Number of visitors from South Korea decreased by 20.2 percent. Number of tourists from the United States declined insignificantly by 1.1 percent. While tourists from several countries do visit Cambodia less than before, the overall trend is positive with tourist arrivals showing steady growth.

Rather surprisingly, the country's main tourist draw, Siem Reap province, home to the famed Angkor Archaeological Park, welcomed 8 percent less foreign tourists that in the previous year, 1.2 million in total. The overall growth is due to the increased number of visitors to Phnom Penh and coastal areas with 2 million overseas tourists having visited the capital and nearly 600,000 – the coastal provinces.

To ensure the positive trend persists, the government is going to join hands with the private sector to create new tourism products to encourage visitors to stay longer in the Kingdom.
