In the first half of 2019, hotel room rates around the the province dropped 5% in media, according to the data of the Thai Hotels Association (THA). Prices were at their lowest from April to June, with the rates down by 8% compared to the same period of the previous year – regardless the Songkran holidays that usually attract large numbers of tourists. While fewer tourists visit Phuket, hoteliers try to draw guests back using a price strategy. It actually means that there has never been a better chance for visiting Phuket for those who count bucks in their pockets.
During the second quarter the average hotel occupancy was at 65% what is in fact an extraordinary low figure for Phuket. The major factor that impacted the overall performance is the 70% fall of the Chinese market.
Another concern for Phuket is oversupply of hotel rooms. Currently there are 93,941 hotel rooms available around the island and at least 15,348 more are expected to be added to existing supply over the next few years. This number does not include villas and hostels. While supply grows faster than demand, prices are likely to remain on the lower side.
