Mount Tangkuban Parahu Closed for Tourists after Eruption

Mount Tangkuban Parahu’s crater in Bandung, West Java is closed for tourists after eruption on July 26. The area is currently being cleared of the ash and debris and no estimates have been announced regarding its re-opening.

Previously Tangkuban Parahu was expected to re-open on July, 30 but the park authorities informed they needed more time for clearing the area. While several trucks were deployed, there is a lot of ash on the roads to the south and northeast of the main crater making the area inaccessible.

According to the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), during the eruption the volcano spewed ash 200 meters in the air. The visitors are strongly discouraged to stay for a night at the tourist complex as there is a high possiblility of increase in volcanic activity.

Tangkuban Parahu is an active  2,284-meter stratovolcano. It is located some 30 km from Bandung and is one of the popular attractions of the West Java. Its Kawah Ratu crater allows to watch the volcanic activity from very close. The area about the main crater is closed when there is emission of harmful gas. There are also other craters that can be visited including Kawah Upas and Kawah Domas.
