Rishikesh' Century-Old Suspension Bridge to Be Replaced by Modern One

An iconic landmark of Rishikesh, an almost centrury old 137 metre long iron suspension Laxman Jhula bridge will be replaced by a new modern bridge. The old bridge was closed on July, 12.

The reason for closure of the iconic bridge across the Ganga RIver was the report of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) that stated the condition of the bridge was too poor to use it.

It will be replaced by a modern bridge built in a high-tech style. It is expected the new bridge will become a tourist attraction of Rishikesh. The company that will build the new bridge has not yet been chosen though several projects have been already submitted for consideration.

While no longer in use, Laxman Jhula will be preserved as Uttarakhand’s cultural heritage. The suspension  bridge over the Ganga River was constructed back in 1923. Since then it became an important part of the local road infrastructure and Uttarakhand's popular landmark. The legend says the bridge marks the exact location where Lakshman, brother of Lord Rama, crossed the river on jute ropes – hence the name of the bridge.
