Royal Barge Procession to Take Part in Bangkok in October

On October, 24, a spectacular Royal Barge Procession will be held on Bangkok's Chao Phraya River as part of the final procedure of the coronation ceremony of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun.

The King will travel down the River to present robes to monks as part of the Royal Kathin Ceremony. Prior to the event, two dressed reheasals are scheduled: on October, 17 and October, 21. For travellers, rehearsals are the best opportunity to take pictures as during the official procession restrictions will apply.

Procession will start from the Wasukri Pier and travel 4 km down to Wat Arun, travelling ander Rama VIII bridge and passing by the Temple of Emerald Buddha, the Grand Palace and Wat Pho along the way. 2,200 oarsmen will row 52 barges that are otherwise kept in National Museum of Royal Barges on the bank of Bangkok Noi khlong. The majority of the vessels are over 200 years old. They are made of wood and elaborately decorated with carving and feature a mythical creature on their bow.

Royal Barge Procession is a rare sight. During the reign of Rama IX 16 Royal Barge Processions were held the last one having taken place in 2012.
