Kep to Get Its Own Tourist Port

Kep to Get Its Own Tourist Port

Kep, Cambodia's southern coastal province, famous for its paradise islands and outstanding seafood, will get its own tourist seaport.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport together with the Ministry of Economy and Finance are discussing the budget for construction a tourist port in Kep province. According to Ministry officials, the construction will be funded by the state. Due to the growing numbers of local and international tourists visiting the province, a new port is badly needed.

While the neighbouring Kampot province is currently building its own tourist seaport and the famous resort city of Sihanoukville, located in Kampot province, already features the country’s only deep seaport, Kep still lacks its own tourist port facility. Kep's port is going to be smaller that that of Kamport and thus its construction will cost significantly less.

Construction of Kampot’s port is financed via an USD18 million loan from the Asian Development Bank. When ready, the port will serve as a gateway to Cambodia for tourists arriving from different seaports in Vietnam and Thailand. It is expected that Kampot's port will become operational before the end of the year. It is not yet clear when construction of Kep's port starts.
