The Beijing Daxing International Airport is located 46 km south of the city centre. It is expected to reach its full capacity by 2025 receiving up to 72 million passengers a year with a potential for expansion to handle up to 100 million travellers a year by 2040. This expansion will make it the largest airport worldwide in terms of traveller capacity within a single terminal.
The eye-catching airport resembles a massive shining starfish and does look impressive. Its 700,000 square meters area makes it one of the world's largest airport terminals. The interior design is characterized by flowing, curved lines. The openings in the roof allow light to filter down freely to the lowest levels of the building. The airport train station and metro line located on the basement level connect the airpot with the city center in 20 minutes.
Beijing Capital International Airport, Beijing's main airport, already functions at the edge of its capacity serving over 100 million passengers annually. After Daxing International Airport is open, it will replace Beijing's second airport, Nanyuan Airport which is scheduled to close immediately after inauguration of the new airport.
