Hotels in Chennai Face Water Shortage

Hotels in the Indian city of ChennaiTamil Nadu, are facing water shortage due to the delayed monsoon this year.

The prevailing drought conditions in the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu are to be blamed for water scarcity. The hotels of all price ranges – from budget to mid-range and to luxury ones – operating throughout the city have to rely on private vendors sourcing water from water tanks.

In total, there are about 8000 hotels in Chennai, all experiencing water shortage. If the monsoon is further delayed, the situation may run out of control. While both hotels and restaurants deny they will be bound to shut down, this scenario looks quite probable.

As water tankers normally source water in 10 km radius from the city, the drought conditions will eventually affect a larger area contributing to the ongoing water crisis. Water tankers then will have to deliver water from as far as 40-50 km from the city what will inevitably rise the cost of water.

Some restaurants have already switched to serving food on banana leaves instead of serving meals in plates.

Hotels are putting efforts in making their guests aware of acute water crisis asking them to cooperate in saving water.

It is the second year in a row when Chennai faces serious water shortage due to lack of monsoon. All the four Chennai's huge water reservoirs have run almost dry.
