The Tourism and Sports Ministry join hands with the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) to set national guidelines for tourism carrying capacity in three areas of the country, i.e. moutains, seas, and historical sites.
Tourism plays an important role in the economy of Thailand and thus simply limiting the numbers of visitors will not work well. The two bodies will use innovative and technological approach to ensure there is no negative impact produced by tourism in each area. To evaluate the ecological impact of tourism, the NSTDA staff will set on for field trips and decide the limits for each destination on site.
The Andaman Sea, the Gulf of Thailand, the Mekong and Chao Phraya rivers and the Lanna region will become the first pilot regions where projects aiming at conservation natural destinations will be launched. If the model proves successful, it will be then extended to other regions of the country.
A special levy on foreign tourists visiting natural destination is also considered. It should be then used for rehabilitation of the latter.
