Initial registration is scheduled to take place on Saturday and Sunday. The first day of racing on Monday will see craft in classes such as bareboat charters, multi-hulls, keelboats and dinghies sail out from Kata and follow courses close to the south coast of Phuket and around the islands of Koh Lon and Koh He.
Heats for the different boat classes will be staged on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Saturday is finals day and prize-giving ceremonies are scheduled to take place once racing is over.
The annual regatta is an eagerly awaited event by both participating crews and spectators. The sight of sailing vessels scudding across the aquamarine waters of the Andaman Sea is one not easily forgotten. On the five evenings after race days gala parties are held at locations including the Kata Beach Resort.
Major sponsors of this year’s regatta include Kata Group Resorts, Sunsail and Singha Beer. The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta was inaugurated in 1987 to mark the landmark 60th birthday of the country’s King Bhumibol.
