Four Official Trails on Mount Rinjiani Reopen

Four hiking trails on Mount Rinjani in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Indonesia, are now officially opened again since last Friday. The mountain was out of reach of travellers after the devastating earthquake hit Lombok in August last year.

A representative of Mount Rinjani National Park Agency (TNGR) assured the public they surveyed the area several times and now can confirm the hiking trails are totally safe.

Opening of the Rijiani hiking trails was long-waited for both by tourists and locals as the majority of locals who inhabit the area depend on tourism providing travellers with accommodation, food and guide services. Since the closure of the trails last year they remained virtually without any means for sustaining their living.

The park agency has also set daily limits of hikers allowed to climb up the official trails. Currently it is set to 500 people. This figure includes hikers, porters and guides. While hiking to Pelawangan is allowed and confirmed safe, the peak of Rinjani and Lake Segara Anak still remain closed. The opened trails are Sembalun in East Lombok, Senaru in North Lombok, Aik Berik in Central Lombok and Timbanuh in North Lombok.

To ensure the limits are respected, all hikers going up and coming down will be recorded. To facilitate purchase of tickets, the park agency offers the e-Rinjani mobile app available on Google Play.
