Stay Healthy – Rainy Season in SEA Brings More Dengue Fever Cases

With the rainy season officially on in many countries of Southeast Asia, the number of Dengue fever cases rises. Travellers are advised to use repellents and always buy medical insurance while going to SEA.

Dengue fever is common in many tropical countries. It is transmitted by mosquitoes. Cases of Dengue fever are registered throughout the year but with rainy weather mosquitoes start breeding and thus there is a higher chance to be bitten by an infected mosquito.

Some of the most common symptoms of Dengue fever are a sudden-onset fever and severe head-ache. Many experience muscle and joints pain, especially at night time. At the late stages of the disease rush can appear covering all parts of the body. Blood tests show a low count of red blood cells.

There is no specific treatment for Dengue fever, medications to treat symptoms are prescribed. It is important to use only paracetamol for bringing the fever down. Aspirin, ibuprofen and similar medicines are best avoided. If RBC count falls below the minimum, the condition becomes life-threatening and the patient needs immediate hospitalisation.

There is a vaccine against Dengue fever introduced recently but it is recommended for those who live in the affected areas permanently.

To avoid mosquito bites, always use repellents, try to stay away from ponds and lakes with still water, use air-condition at night and wear long sleeves and long trousers.
