Thailand to revamp three key airports

Thailand’s government has announced it will endorse a multi-billion Baht budget to improve three of the country’s international airports. Prajin Juntong, the national transport minister, said the lion’s share of the THB93 billion would be used to revamp Suvarnabhumi, the main airport just outside the capital city of Bangkok.

The minister told reporters late last week that the government was in favour of the plan by the Airports of Thailand (AoT) to expand Suvarnabhumi as well as revamp Don Muang and Phuket airports. The minister continued by saying he was for any improvements which enhanced passenger convenience.

He added that improvements at Suvarnabhumi would include building an additional runway and a satellite passenger terminal. The air-chief-marshal said these improvements would increase the airport’s annual passenger capacity and have results in areas such as cutting down waiting times at immigration counters.

AoT chairman Prasong Poontaneat stated that the plan will also see Phuket Airport equipped with a new terminal while Don Muang, Bangkok’s second airport, will get THB3 million to enable it to upgrade and increase its annual capacity to 30 million passengers. He added that extra funds might be needed to develop duty-free outlets at the airports to provide shoppers with more choice.
