Shinkansen Bullet Train Stations in Japan Now Feature Free Wi-Fi

While all the shinkansen train station are already equipped with Wi-Fi access points, railway companies operating the bullet train services will proceed with the installation of free wireless networks on trains. Before the Summer Games eight of their nine shinkansen lines will have Wi-Fi points installed and fully operational.

The lines on which Wi-Fi networks will be installed before March, 2020 are the Hokkaido, Tohoku, Akita, Yamagata, Hokuriku, Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen lines. The Joetsu Shinkansen Line is scheduled to have the intallation works after April 2020.

The first shinkansen train was put in operation in Japan in 1964, and since then the network has expanded to currently consist of over 3,000 km of lines with maximum speeds of 240–320 kmph. The network presently links most major cities on the islands of Honshu and Kyushu, and Hakodate on northern island of Hokkaido, with an extension to Sapporo under construction and scheduled to commence in March 2031.
