Imperial Family Related Destinations in Japan

May 1 marks the beginning of the Reiwa Period in Japan and the new Emperor is scheduled to ascend the throne. It is a good idea to explore some places of interest in Japan related to the Imperial Family.

Imperial Palaces
The current Imperial Palace is located in Tokyo on the former grounds of Edo Castle. Surrounded by impressive stone walls, it features a large park and a moat. Besides Tokyo Palace, former palaces opened for tourists are: Kyoto Imperial Palace, the residence of the Imperial Family until 1868; Sento Palace built in 1630, also in Kyoto; and Heijo Palace in Nara, used by the emperors during the Nara period from 710 till 794.

Imperial villas
These villas served as retreats or the secondary homes for the members of the Imperial families. Some of them are integrated into larger temple complexes. Kyoto has the highest concentration of Imperial villas to visit starting from the 17th century Shugakuin villa, to the Katsura Family villa and two temple villas, a UNESCO listed Ninnaji Temple and Daikakuji Temple that has celebrated its 1150th anniversary. For a change, visit Tamozawa villa in Nikko, one of the largest remaining wooden structures in Japan.

Emperor's Shrines
There are quite a few shrines across the country dedicated to outstanding emperors. Some of the most impressive are Usa shrine on the Kunisaki peninsular; Tokyo's Meiji shrine; Kyoto's Heian shrine; and Kashihara shrine located near Asuka.
