Maya Bay is one of the biggest draws of Thailand’s southern province of Krabi. It got so popular with tourist arrivals reaching about 5,000 visitors a day that the authorities were finally bound to close the bay for a rehabilitation period to allow nature to regenerate the ecosystem. The initial closure period that started on June, 1, 2018 was supposed to come to an end in April, but it proved to be too short to restore the beach area as planned. While both marine and land ecosystems did improve considerably, it requires more time to make the bay healthy again.
Some of the signs of the improvement of ecology in the bay include frequent sightings of blacktip coral sharks near the beach. Also, some 23,000 corals farmed at a coral centre in Trang province that have been planted in the sea by volunteer divers show steady growth. Yet the department is ready to extend the new six-month closure indefinitely – a longer closure of the bay may last as long as four–five years.
