The project will add 4 km of railway tracks to LRT Line 2 and will cost the government the total of PHP2.2 billion. The extention will connect Santolan in Pasig City with Masinag in Antipolo City. It is the first of the four similar rail-building projects that are currently in the pipeline waiting for completion.
The Santolan-Masinag extension will include two stations, both in Rizal province: the first one is Emerald Station in Cainta and the second one is Masinag in Antipolo City. When completed, the extention will allow LRT 2 to serve an additional of 80,000 riders. The DOTr expects to complete the track-laying and integration of the EMS into the existing system by the fourth quarter of 2020. The EMS includes the signaling system, overhead catenary system, telecommunications system, and the power supply and distribution system.
The initial phase of the extention project involved construction of a viaduct and was finished in 2017. The two new stations are already 78 percent complete. Thus the whole Light Rail Transit Line 2 east extension project is nearing completion at the moment. It will reduce travel time from Recto, Manila to Masinag, Antipolo City to mere 40 minutes.
