Fuji Shibazakura Festival On in Japan

If the idea of heading to Japan for sakura blooming sounds too touristy, then consider catching glimpses of amazing shibazakura flower carpets indtead.

Shibazakura is Moss Flox, a spreading, mat-forming, sun-loving phlox that flowers in the mid April providing a mesmerizing hanami experience that rivals the one from witnessing sakura blossom. Since 2008, a special Fuji Shibazakura festival is held annually attracting visitors with a breathtaking sight of 800,000 Moss Flox plants covering with its white, pink and red flowers the 2.3 ha of land at the foothills of the mighty Mount Fuji

Last year, over half a million guests visited the festival and this time it is going to be even bigger. The festival opened on April, 13 and will last till May, 26 – flower lovers have about 45 days to marvel the beauty of shibazakura. The site of the festival is 3 km from Lake Motosuko within Fuji 5 Lakes (Fujigoko) site.

Shibazakura is rightfully considered one of the most popular spring flowers in Japan though by some reason it does not enjoy a similar international recognition as sakura does. As the event draws many tourists, try to get to the site as early as you can to beat the crowds. The entrance fee is 600 yen.
