While Thingyan was historically the time for splashing water and celebrating with the family, now more and more Myanmar people choose to travel during these long holidays either to famous pagodas across Myanmar or abroad for beach-bumming or city sightseeing.
Among the foreign destinations, central and northern Vietnam attracts the majority of visitors from Myanmar. Last year, Kunming, Xi An and Qian Du in China were high on travel itineraries for Myanmar citizens celebrating Thingyan. Thailand, another regional destination, retains its popularity, too.
In Myanmar, Tanintharyi, Mandalay and Shan State top the ranking of the most frequent choices for travel during Thingyan. Myitkyina, Indawgyi Lake and Myitsone in Kachin State, the glass bridge in China and Shin Koe Shin (nine pagodas) in Dawei in Taninthayi form another popular group of destinations within Myanmar for those who like sightseeing. And beach holiday lovers usually opt for Chaung Tha, Ngwe Saung and Ngapali.
