The Global Cuisines survey conducted between May and December last year was based on opinion and votes of 25,000 food lovers from 24 countries worldwide. Interestingly, the Australians (75%) and foodies from Hong Kong (77%) were among those who voted for Vietnamese cuisine more often than representatives of other countries. It is not the type of food for those from Saudi Arabia (18%) and the Indonesians (34%), Italians (36%) and Chinese (37%) seem to appreciate flavours of the Vietnamese cuisine the least. In general, according to this rating, the Vietnamese kitchen is slightly ahead of Hong Kong and Taiwan to rank 13th among the 34 most popular cuisines in the world.
Over the last couple of decades, international chefs and prestigious food magazines have been praising several national dishes of Vietnam quite often thus contributing to the growth of popularity of Vietnamese cuisine.
Some of the best dishes to try while in Vietnam include Pho, Vietnam’s most famous soup eaten across the country and served in restaurants around the world; Banh Mi, a small baguette with meat, vegetables and pate, one of the legacies of the French colonial days in Indochina; Banh Xeo, a type of savoury pancake; Cao Lau, a traditional meal in Central Vietnam, a delicious bowl of rice-flour noodles mixed with pork and bean sprouts in a light soup; and Bun Rieu, soft rice noodles, tomatoes, fried tofu, pork and congealed pig’s blood all mixed in broth.
