Hiking Trail to Mount Slamet Reopened from March, 2

Mount Slamet in Purbalingga Regency, Central Java, Indonesia, locally known as Gunung Slamet, is opened to hikers again after the ecosystem recovery efforts of the past several months started to yield results and weather conditions also improved.

The trail was closed in January in order to help flora and fauna rehabilitate and preserve fragile ecosystem of the area that suffered from negative impact of increased hiking activities during the New year period. The trail to the summit of Slamet is notorious for being one of the most littered hiking trails on Java. Now the situation has reportedly improved and the Purbalingga Tourism, Sports and Youth Agency took a decision to open the main hiking trail to Mount Slamet through Bambangan, Kutabawa village in Karangreja district, Purbalingga for visitors.

Gunung Slamet is an active stratovolcano. It last errupted in 2014. It is also the highest volcano in Central Java and the second highest in Java. Guided hikes to the summit which is located on the old crater wall or just transport to the trail head are better organized from Purokerto.

The climb to Mount Slamet is a strenious one and is not recommended for unprepeared hikers. Last year Purbalingga Tourism Agency issued a notice for hikers who wanted to climb Mount Slamet to obtain medical certificates to to ensure hikers’ safety. The medical certificate should be obtained not earlier than three days before the hike. It will also serve as a guarantee your insurance company will cover medical expenses in case you need help during your hike.
