Three Cities in Cambodia to Join Asean Smart Cities Network

Phnom Penh, Battambang and Siem Reap, three cities in Cambodia, were chosen for ASEAN urban planning scheme that focuses on smart and sustainable urban development.

The ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN) is a collaborative platform that aims at facilitating cooperation on smart cities development, and secure funding and support from ASEAN’s external partners. Cambodian project will be supported by Japan. Japan will assist Cambodia in creating new and technologically advanced urban spaces as well as modern facilities to improve the lives of their citizens.

The Japanese team is highly experienced in urban planning and is ready to help Cambodia avoid the same mistakes that they made in the past in urban development. They are focusing on the key issues like combatting traffic, creating green spaces, efficient use of energy resources, and creating efficient recycling systems.

Currently there are 23 cities in the network: Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay and Yangon in Myanmar; Hanoi, Danang and Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam; Vientiane and Luang Prabang in Laos; Bangkok, Chonburi and Phuket in Thailand; Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, Bandar Seri Begawan and Kuching in Malaysia; Singapore; Jakarta, Banyuwangi and Makassar in Indonesia; Manila, Cebu City and Davao City in the Philippines. With three Cambodian cities the number of Smart Cities Network members grows to 26.
