Siargao, Coron Are Next for Rehab

The Department of Tourism of the Philippines are eyeing rehabilitation of Siargao and Coron islands. Sustainable tourism is high priority for the national government and rehabilitation efforts will continue country-wide.

Currently this as ongoing activities in Manila Bay aiming at cleaning the sea and beach to allow marine biodiversity to florish again. Boracay island, which was first on the list of destination that badly needed rehabilitation and fixing its unregulated sewage system, closed for six month last year and is now opened after revamp with limited numbers of tourists allowed to stay on the island overnight. Rehabilitation was definitely a positive experience for Boracay and now the model can be adopted by other destinations country-wide.

Lately, Panglao island, Bohol, joined the club and El Nido, on Palawan, is also under a major makeover. Siargao, 800 km southeast of Manila in Surigao del Norte province, well-known for its outstanding diving and snorkelling opportunities, and Coron island, in the province of Palawan, are waiting for their turn. Neither of the above mentioned islands is closed nor will be closed – cleanups will go on simultaneously with everyday tourist activities.
