Thai ATM pool to shut down tonight

The Bank of Thailand has announced that the national ATM pool will be shut down tonight to enable system upgrades. A bank spokesperson said yesterday that the inter-bank system operator, National ITMX, needed to close the network between 00:00 and 02:00.

People will still be able to use the ATMs, but only to withdraw funds from the bank that issued their particular card. The inter-bank network shutdown will stop ATM users from withdrawing funds from overseas banks or from any other domestic bank than their own.

The spokesperson said the shutdown was necessary so that National ITMX could move its operational centre to a new facility. The spokesperson also warned that there would be some system testing going on between 22:00 and 24:00 this evening.

The bank says people should be able to use ATMs as normal during this period, but in case of any glitches National ITMX had already prepared a contingency plan. ATMs operated by banks in the pool will revert to the backup system and the spokesperson says customers should not be inconvenienced in any way.
