Annual That Sikhottabong Stupa Festival Will Be Held in February

The annual Boun Pha That Sikhottabong Stupa Festival in Thakhek city, Thammouane province in Laos will start on February, 14 and go on till February, 19 this year.

The stupa festival is held every year during the third month of the lunar calendar. It features a huge food & product fair, cultural and music perfirmances, folk games, a pegeant contest and religios cermons at the temple.

The temple itself is a contemporary to That Inhang, the second most venerated Buddhist stupa in the country located in Savannakhet province, and Phra That Phanom Chedi, a famous stupa in Nakhon Phanom province in Thailand. All the three are said to contain Lord Buddha's relics and bear visible resemblance in architecture style.

That Sikhottabong, also known as Sikhottabong Stupa, dates back to the 15th century and the reign of the King Setthathirath, one of the greatest leaders in the history of Laos.

To get to Thakhek, use buses. There are buses between Thai Nakhon Phanom and Thakhek – it takes about 90 minutes and LAK20,000 to reach Laos from Thailand. Buses from and to Vientiane the capital need about 7–8 hours and cost between LAK60,000 and LAK80,000.
