Thailand hits top expat spot for cheap living

A report released by the HSBC bank says that Thailand is in the top 10 of affordable locations for expats to live in. The country ranked first in the table on monthly expenses in comparison to quality of life and seventh in the table of affordable places to live.

The HSBC Expat Explorer 2014 report shows that expat respondents in Thailand said they spent considerably less than other expats based in locations such as Bahrain, Hong Kong and Singapore. They said outgoings for accommodation, household utilities, food and transportation were lower in Thailand.

Thai expats told surveyors that the resulting surplus of income allowed them the freedom to travel around Southeast Asia. They added that Bangkok was a convenient location from which to explore and that the city’s Suvarnabhumi Airport gave easy access to nearby counties.

Thawatchai Arunyik, the governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said the HSBC report showed the many expats living in Bangkok and other Thai cities held their adopted country in high regard. He continued by saying it also indicated that Thailand offered excellent value for money.
