The KLIA2 fee was first introduced in May 2014 and was used to cover extra expenses that the airline bore at the airport. The reason for that was that KLIA2 was not a great fit for low-cost carriers due to the airport's requirement for compulsory use of certain facilities and services imposed by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) like aerobridges, SITA check-in and boarding systems which low-cost carriers try to avoid in order to reduce ticket prices for their passengers.
In the meantime, AirAsia remains in a legal battle with MAHB over the increase of passenger service charge in KLIA2 which jumped from RM50 to RM73 in order to make the PSC standard in both KLIA and KLIA2. The airline puts sterss on that the facilities in KLIA2 are much inferior to what is offered to passengers in KLIA, and it is totally unfair to make passengers pay the same amount at the both airports.
